If calcium carbonate is present in brick raw material, quicklime will be produced in the kiln. These quicklime, with the help of water, will form hydrated lime and the process expands. Sufficiently large lime particle located near the surface will pop off a piece of brick which will generally create a circular pit. The process is known as lime pitting of bricks.
